Colors of Greece: The Art and Archaeology of Georg von Peschke

Dorothy Burr Thompson (1900–2001) received her A.B. and Ph.D. from Bryn Mawr College. In December, 1931, Dorothy Burr (later Thompson), Agnes Newhall (later Stillwell), and Richard Stillwell visited Georg and Faltaina von Peschke at Faltaina’s family home of Skyros. Thompson took dozens of photographs on the trip and captured some of the people that figured in Peschke’s paintings. The shepherd Yero (“Old Man”) Mourtzis and the woman at her loom appear in three of the paintings in this exhibition (Yero Mourtzis [1935], Yero Mourtzis [1945], and Woman at Loom, Skyros [1929]). Her diary makes clear how much she valued friendship with the Peschkes. She also collected his paintings; the painting of Chora on Skyros belongs to her daughter, Pamela Sinkler-Todd (BMC ’60).
