SERE and Biderman
After the attacks on 9/11, American counter terrorism agents picked up hundreds of prisoners they called "enemy combatants" and brought them to Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Cuba - an American protectorate since the Spanish American War in 1898, for interrogation. There, the US government assumed these prisoners could be interrogated without interference or legal protection. Those creating interrogation techniques for use at Guantanamo pulled Biderman’s chart directly from his 1957 article – without noting its “False Confession” title - and appended it to their 2002 planning documents. The tactics had been part of SERE Training regimens for so long that no one recalled from where they had come.
